The Leader of the Commons, William Hague, recently mentioned in his remarks at Westminster that England is at risk of being held ransom by Scottish Nationalists in case the Labour party disagrees to implement a system of ‘English votes for English laws.’ According to Hague, Ed Miliband is refusing to back a veto for English MPs over legislation that applies only to their constituents in order to keep the possibility of a Labour-SNP coalition secure.

However, the Conservatives seem adamant to implement their plan of stripping Scottish MPs of the power to impose tax changes, education and health reforms on England, in response to the Scottish Parliament soon having control of these issues without any say of the English MPs. Quite noticeably, the proposed reform would thwart a possible future Labour government and make it impossible for them to press ahead with its plan to raise the top rate of tax to 50p in England since it might fail to gather support of a majority of English MPs.

Even though Mr. Hague is persistent that it is a ‘simple matter of fairness,’ his blueprint has provoked a furious response from Labour and the SNP along with Right-wing Tories as well. In addition to that, Former Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, also alleged the proposals ‘put party before country’ and ‘risk the very survival of the UK.’ He pointed out that the governments have failed for over 150 years to resolve the issue of ‘English votes’ while maintaining the ‘unity of the UK’.
