The results of Lord Ashcroft’s poll have spurred fear among Labour ranks last night as it speculated the party will face an electoral wipeout at the hands of the Scottish nationalists in May elections. Consequently, Labour’s Scottish MPs, including its election chief Douglas Alexander, are being pressured to leave Westminster and head north to try to save their seats. The polling of key Scottish constituencies has suggested the SNP is heading for landslide victories in May.
The poll has listed several key politicians in Scotland anticipated to face electoral defeats, completely challenging Ed Miliband’s plans of a Commons majority. The Shadow Foreign Secretary, Mr. Alexander, and the Shadow Scottish Secretary, Margaret Curran, are among those anticipated to lose their seat in the upcoming election. Overall, the poll suggests an average swing from Labour to the SNP of 25 per cent, which would mean the SNP might grab up to 35 of the 41 seats Labour won in 2010, leaving them humiliated in a traditional heartland. Additionally, it also suggests the SNP will control the balance of power in a future hung Parliament.
Among those anticipated to lose their seats were Labour’s former deputy leader in Scotland, Anas Sarwar, and rising stars Gemma Doyle and Pamela Nash in West Dunbartonshire and Airdrie and Shotts. The findings are equally grim for the Liberal Democrats, with a pitiful 12 per cent of voters who backed the party in 2010 saying they will do so again.
