U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron has finally agreed to a TV debate with other party leaders during the general election campaign. According to the PM, he has signed up for a one seven-way debate hosted by ITV on April 2, along with several election specials – but without going head to head against Ed Miliband.

A statement by the Downing Street confirmed that Mr Cameron had accepted the proposal on Saturday even though he had decided last week not to take part in any debates after next week. Addressing the media at 10 Downing Street tonight, Mr Cameron stated that “there was a formal offer of a set of television programmes including a televised debate, put together by the broadcasters led by the BBC and as Prime Minister, I accepted that deal in full.” Moreover, Cameron added that “this was an offer put together by the broadcasters, accepted by me on Saturday. The other parties have now got to stop running away from this and agree to the debate that the broadcasters have now suggested.”

The new proposal drafted by media channels has scheduled several election specials involving various party leaders along with a one seven-way debate on April 2. Most importantly, Mr Cameron and Ed Miliband are scheduled to be interviewed one after the other on March 26, i.e. next Thursday, by Jeremy Paxman and then questioned by a studio audience in a Sky/Channel 4 special. However quite noticeably, the two leaders would appear separately and never share the stage.
