Scottish Labour leader, Jim Murphy, has announced drastic measures as a part of his radical five-point plan in order to end the shameful need for food banks. According to Murphy, he can save up to £175 million by scrapping the bedroom tax to wipe out poverty in Scotland. Quite noticeably, Ed Miliband pledged to abolish the bedroom tax if he becomes Prime Minister in May.

Currently, the Scottish Government currently spends approximately £35 million a year mitigating the impact of the hated tax, which the Labour has vowed to reroute into an anti-poverty fund. They hope to accumulate over £175 million within the five years of the next parliament to help the most vulnerable Scots. The announcement was made by Labour’s shadow Work and Pensions Minister, Rachel Reeves, in Glasgow as she branded David Cameron the “Food Bank Prime Minister” and urged Scots to back Labour in the general election. She alleged that “in just 44 days’ time people in Scotland can decide the general election. Scotland can get rid of the Food Bank Prime Minister and elect a Labour Government which will protect vulnerable people across the UK by scrapping the bedroom tax.”

Reeves explained that “a UK Labour Government scrapping the bedroom tax means more money in the Scottish budget to support and protect those have borne the brunt of five years of the Tories. David Cameron’s failure to tackle low pay has led to an 1147 per cent increase in the number of people in Scotland using food banks.” She said that “Scotland can protect vulnerable people across the UK and deliver more money in the Scottish budget with a UK Labour Government.”
