A report by the Kings Fund, i.e. a leading think tank, has highlighted that the performance of NHS is declining at the fastest rate in two decades, while at the same time appreciating the Coalition for better performance in the first three years. The report claims that the health service “held up well” for the first three years of the current Government, but as of now the patient care is under threat and the waiting lists are most likely to lengthen amid a growing financial crisis.

The chief economist at the think tank, Prof John Appleby, remarked that the next Government would “inherit a health service that has run out of money and is operating at the very edge of its limits.” He alleged that it was “very worrying” that a substantial number of hospitals now had “dangerously high” levels of bed occupancy, underlining that the levels were so high that they directly placed patients at risk of infection.

Despite highlighting the current deteriorating condition, the report also remarked several aspects of NHS performance in the years after the Coalition took power and praised that priority was given to patient safety, in the wake of the Mid-Staffs scandal, and increased investment in doctors and nurses. According to the figures quoted in the report, 17 per cent more doctors and almost 3 per cent more nurses are now employed by the NHS compared with 2010, while the number of managers fell by 17 per cent.
