An announcement by British police on Thursday has revealed that almost half of the total 700 Britons who are believed to have travelled to Syria have returned home and now pose a significant terrorism threat. The lead officer on counter-terrorism, Mark Rowley, explained that there were a record number of 338 arrests related to terrorism offences last year, i.e. a one-third increment from 2013, with almost a half related to the conflict in Syria.

According to Rowley, out of the 700 Britons believed to have returned from Syria, “a significant proportion” were thought to have tried to join Islamic State (IS) militants who have taken over swathes of Syria and Iraq. He stated that “(IS) and other terrorist groups are trying to direct attacks in the UK; encouraging British citizens to travel to Syria to fight and train; and are seeking, through propaganda, to provoke individuals in the UK to carry out violent attacks here.”

In his remarks, Rowley pointed out that the threat ranges from “lone actors intent on carrying out crude and violent attacks” to more preplanned and coordinated plots by organized networks. He revealed that among those arrested last year, 11 percent were women and 17 percent were aged under 20. Quite noticeably, Britain raised its terrorism threat alert last August to from second-highest level of “severe,” which implies that an attack was considered highly likely with security chiefs repeatedly warning about the danger posed by battle-hardened veterans of fighting in Syria returning home.
