Recent reports have claimed that UK Prime Minister, David Cameron, is aiming to hold the referendum on Britain’s European Union membership in June next year provided that leaders of other member states in the 28-nation bloc agree to the bulk of his reform plans at a December summit. The report also mentioned that Cameron has planned to renegotiate Britain’s ties with the bloc ahead of a membership vote by the end of 2017.

Meanwhile, the official statement from Cameron’s office failed to confirm the news and said that the government did not decide on any date of the vote as yet. The reply stated that “as the Prime Minister has said, what will determine the timing of the referendum is the outcome of the negotiation, within the deadline of the end of 2017.” The Prime Minister is due to address a letter to the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, on Tuesday that will outline his reform demands. Moreover, he will threaten to back a British exit from the bloc in case a deal is not reached.

The reports allege that UK’s EU allies have been indicated that if a December summit of EU leaders goes well, it will prefer holding the referendum in June 2016. Many EU leaders are pressing not to delay the vote in light of another migration crisis looming next summer. Latest opinion polls have pointed out that difference between Britons favouring to stay or leave the black has lessened in recent months.
