UK Independence Party’s ruling National Executive Committee is set to discuss Douglas Carswell’s call for Nigel Farage’s resignation. In response to the demand for resignation, Ukip’s chairman, Steve Crowther, cautioned Mr Carswell that his comments had been “very unhelpful,” adding that four million voters of the party in this year’s general election deserved better. Whereas on the other hand, Mr Carswell has stressed that Mr Farage has now run his course as leader and called for a “fresh face” to take over.

However, Mr Farage’s supporters have complained about the timing of Mr Carswell’s comments. Mr Crowther also informed that Ukip’s National Executive Committee would demand answers from him at its next meeting in January. In his remarks, Mr Crowther alleged that Carsewell was “absolutely wrong” to suggest that a disappointing result in the Oldham by-election showed Mr Farage had taken the party as far as he could.

According to Mr Crowther, any discussion about the leadership could’ve been discussed when the party’s 19-strong National Executive Committee – on which both the politicians sit – meets next month. He stated that “this is very unhelpful. As a party chairman it is not something I relish,” adding that “there is a time and a place to have discussions about the leadership of the party but I don’t think that on the eve of an EU summit or on the BBC is either of them.” Crowther also mentioned that “this news was released on the day we were celebrating the utter collapse of the Prime Minister’s negotiating position in Europe.”
