The Meteorological Office of the UK has issued two of the most severe weather warnings on Saturday in result of continuous torrential rain in northern England since the past few days, which have caused a havoc in the rivers as they burst their banks and flood nearby villages. The department issued “red” warnings of potential danger to life in the counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire, along with more than 300 other flood warnings across the country.
Prime Minister David Cameron and heir to the throne Prince Charles have visited areas of Cumbria, northwest England, where the floods started earlier this month. The government has already sent troops to the area to help reinforce defences against rising water levels. In his remarks, Floods Minister Rory Stewart stated that “certainly what we’ve seen is rainfall levels that nobody’s ever seen before.” According to the recent forecasts, the rain in the areas might ease over the next few days but even more downpours are anticipated to arrive next week.
The “red” warnings issued by the Meteorological office stated that “very severe weather conditions are expected,” adding that there is need to “take action to remain safe and protect property. Widespread flooding will lead to severe disruption to travel and danger to life.” There have been floods in the western half of England in the previous winters as well, due to which Cameron’s critics have accused the government of cutting back or delaying flood defense programs as it tries to bring down the country’s budget deficit. However, the government denies the charge and says it is increasing real-terms spending on flood protection.
