tories gain support in scotland amid shrinking labour voters-baseRecent polls have shown that Tories are challenging Labour for second place in the Scottish ridings and they might possibly be headed for their best-ever result in elections to the Scottish parliament later this year. The Tories might just become the official opposition now even though they did not even care about Scotland just two years ago. That, at least, was the conclusion of a leading polling exercise in late 2013.

According to the latest poll conducted by YouGov, the two parties are neck and neck. A Tory member explained that “overtaking Labour has become a credible possible outcome,” adding that “if you’d suggested that was possible this time last year, people would have laughed in your face.” Speaking about the reason behind the rapid increase in support, politics professor at the University of Strathclyde, John Curtice, elucidated that “the only reason the Tory party is doing so well is because Labour are doing so badly,” adding that “this is the first time since 1997 that there’s been any evidence of an increase in Tory support at all.” Mr Curtice stressed “don’t exaggerate the size of the rise.”

Conservatives are again up about 3 percentage points in the polls since last year’s general election. Whereas on the other hand, the Labour Party’s support is continuously declining since independence referendum in 2014. They were in the early 30s at the time of the vote but they’ve now have fallen at about 20 per cent. Mr Curtice pointed out that “everyone is wondering what is rock bottom for the Labour party,” commenting that “it’s dire.”
