corbyn urges cameron to reconsider academies planThe Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, has urged Prime Minister David Cameron to reconsider the academies plan as he accused the PM of pursuing a “top-down” reorganization of England’s education system. In his announcement last month, George Osborne revealed that all schools will be made academies by 2022. However, the announcement has received sheer criticism by not only the Liberals but some Tory figures too, including former education secretary Lord Baker.

During Prime Minister’s Questions, Mr Corbyn inquired the PM about why he is ignoring the warnings from his Tory colleagues and others. In his reply, Mr Cameron explained that “the short answer is because we want schools to be run by headteachers and teachers and not by bureaucrats…we also support it because of the clear evidence of academies, if you look at converter academies 88% of them are good or outstanding…the results are better, education’s improving, I say let’s complete the work.”

PM Cameron alleged that “I would say to outstanding or to good schools they have nothing to fear from becoming academies, but a huge amount to gain – we want them to be even better and the truth is that academies and greater independence, letting headteachers run their schools, has been hugely effective…” He added that “this is something started by the Labour government and given rocket boosters by this government. We’ve seen massive improvement because of academies and we say ‘get on with it, finish the job’.”
