nobel prize winning scientists urge britain to vote for remainA group of Nobel Prize winning scientists have urged the voters in the U.K. to remain in the European Union when the time comes for referendum on June 23. The group warned on Saturday that Britain will not only lose its funding for science and innovation but it will also loose global influence and access to expertise if the nation votes to leave the 28-nation bloc.

The open letter addressed to the Daily Telegraph newspaper included signatures of thirteen Nobel laureates who argued that the prospect of losing EU research funding was a key risk to science. It was stressed that the idea of Britain’s Treasury making up for any funding shortfall was “naive and complacent” given that successive governments have allowed support for research to languish. The letter said that “we may be an island, but we cannot be an island in science,” adding that “being part of the EU is good for British science and that is good for Britain.” The signatories included Peter Higgs, who won the prize for predicting the existence of the so-called Higgs boson. Physics laureate Kostya Novoselov, who pioneered the use of graphene, and geneticist Paul Nurse, also signed.

Prior to Nobel Prize winning scientists, political leaders, former generals and business leaders have all argued that the country would be less powerful, less safe and less prosperous outside the EU. Moreover, the International Monetary Fund, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the Bank of England have also warned of an economic turmoil in the aftermath of Brexit.
