‘No right’ for Iranian workers

Stop repression of Iran’s working class, says a group of Turkish labour activists.

A campaign launched by Turkey’s “Association of International Workers’ Solidarity” (UID-DER) is calling on Iranian authorities to cease their repression of Iranian workers.

The Association’s petition has already been signed by a number of Turkish trade-union leaders, activists, intellectuals, artists and scholars and sympathetic to the labour cause. It hopes to raise awareness about “the repression of Iranian working class and the bans on union activity.”

They say that “there is no right” for those who wish to mobilise or hold strikes in Iran. The “basic rights and freedoms [of workers] are suppressed … workers’ leaders such as Mansour Osanloo and Reza Shahabi were imprisoned, that some workers’ leaders were even hanged.”

“We call [for] international workers’ solidarity.”

“Our solidarity campaign,” UID-DER continues, “is also attracting great interest, and it is continuing.”

Prior to his house arrest in February 2011, the leader of the opposition Green Movement, Mir Hossein Mousavi, voiced his regret for the worsening situation of the working class in Iran.

Ahead of International Labour Day 2010, he stressed that it was “very important that teachers and workers understand the reality that the problems they face in their daily lives are due to the current general affairs of the country and that there is a strong and direct relationship between the two.”

“Workers and teachers are looking for freedom, because it allows them to continue with their syndicate activities. They seek economic justice as well as justice in their livelihoods and in the distribution of social wealth, which helps them better protect their independence. Justice enables them to create wealth and to be more beneficial to society through their services.”
