‘This level of drought is not normal’
An Iranian vice president has suggested that the West is responsible for the recent droughts in southern Iran.
Seyed Hassan Mousavi, the head of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHHTO), told the country’s semi-official news agency Isna that he suspects Western powers of being behind the recurrent episodes of drought in the country’s southern provinces.
Mousavi made the remarks at a ceremony held to introduce Iran’s new chief of meteorological department.
“I think that global imperialism is impacting the climate in Iran using technology, and I think that the country’s Meteorological Organisation can find the root cause of this corrupt act,” Mousavi said. He went on to add that the droughts had been part of the West’s “soft war” against the country.
“This level of drought is not normal.”
Following the country’s widely contested 2009 presidential election and its aftermath, the term “soft war” was used by high-ranking Iranian officials to refer to efforts to destabilise the Islamic Republic.
In November 2009, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei claimed that Iran was in the throes of a “soft war” with its enemies abroad. He said that this form of war was being waged using a “mixture of cultural means and advanced communication equipment to spread lies and rumours and cause doubt and divisions among the people”. He maintained that the massive 2009 protests were part of the so-called “soft war.”
