District 2 RCMP have scaled back search efforts for a man who fell overboard when a 16-foot aluminum boat sank on the St. John River, near Fredericton, on Monday.

27-year-old Roy Gallagher, of the St. Mary’s First Nation was one of five people in the boat. Three other people, two women and a man, all from the Fredericton area, were rescued from the river. Another man, 34-year-old Carter Gallagher, of Kingsley, N.B., was pulled from the water, but later died.

"Searches of the river and nearby shoreline over the past three days have found no sign of Roy Gallagher," says Sgt. Don Stenger of the District 2 Oromocto RCMP. "This has been difficult for Mr. Gallagher’s family and many friends. Unfortunately, there is no evidence to suggest that Mr. Gallagher survived. While the search is being scaled back, we will continue to conduct regular patrols in the area."

Members of the District 2 RCMP, Fredericton City Police, York-Sunbury Search and Rescue, as well as other partner agencies, members of the St. Mary’s First Nation and members of the public have participated in the search.
