Yesterday, officers of the RCMP Airport Federal Investigation Section (AFIS), assisted by the Mont-Tremblant and Longueuil police departments, arrested three individuals involved in a conspiracy to import 5.8 kilograms of cocaine from Ecuador.

The investigation stemmed from a drug seizure made at the Montréal-Trudeau Airport on December 1, 2009, when Canada Border Services Agency officers intercepted a man and a woman with cocaine concealed on their persons. The ensuing criminal investigation to uncover the smuggling ring was entrusted to the RCMP.

It was established that Richard Barrette, 47, of Saint-Hubert, Dany Larocque, 42, of Saint-Léonard, and André Savage, 52, of Mont-Tremblant coordinated the importation of cocaine into Canada from Ecuador. The suspects recruited accomplices in Canada to act as runners.

The three men have been charged with cocaine importation and with conspiracy to import cocaine under the Criminal Code and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. The investigation into the matter continues and further arrests and charges are possible.
