On Monday, June 13, 2011 Jocelyn Kelly of Edmonton was charged under the Traffic Safety Act for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. A court date of July 29, 2011 has been set for first appearance.
Background:
At approximately 8:20 a.m. Thursday, April 7, 2011 a brown 2000 Ford Explorer, driven by Kelly, was east bound on 122 Avenue approaching 128 Street. At the same time two pedestrians (a great-grandmother and great-grandchild) were walking northbound on the east sidewalk of 128 Street about to cross 122 Avenue. As they entered the roadway in an unmarked crosswalk, Kelly continued through the intersection striking the adult female.
Seconds before being struck, the great-grandmother pushed her six-year-old great-grandchild out of the path of the impacting vehicle. Although the child was not directly involved in the collision, she suffered minor injuries from falling to the ground. The great-grandmother was treated and transported to hospital via ambulance and died soon after.
