Were you there? Do you have a story to tell? Do you have photos? We want to hear from you. Give us your comments, upload your pictures. Let’s all share our memories of this night of nights! Toronto photograher Annandi Merhai was there following the event and has already uploaded her pictures from some of the pre-award show events and the big show itself. Check out June 23rd, June 24th, and June 25th.
All of today’s papers are running stories about last night’s event. The glitz and the glamour seems to have enthralled everyone as enthusiasm for both the participants and the audience was running high. The Globe joked that the award ceremony “opened with a Dabangg” as the Salman Khan movie walked away with 10 awards including Best Film and Best Screenplay. However, in a bit of a surprise, Best Actor did not go to Salman Khan but went instead to Shahrukh Khan, the star of the film “My Name is Khan”. This melodrama about Muslims facing backlash after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks also picked up four other awards including best director for Karan Johar.
CTV reports that of the 22,000 tickets available to the public , roughly 16,000 of the sold out in minutes. If you were lucky enough to get a seat, prices varied between $49 and $125 and supposedly resellers were offering last-minute tickets online for as much as $1,500 each.
Reuters added that while tens of thousands were in attendance at a Toronto stadium for the 12th edition of the IIFA awards, a worldwide TV audience of up to 700 million viewers were expected to have tuned in for the show.
Debuting in 2000 in London, the IIFAs have been held on four continents in cities including Dubai, Bangkok, Colombo, Singapore, Macau and Johannesburg but never in India. The idea, organisers said, is to present Bollywood not in its home country but on a global stage.

FYI: We discovered that there was no live streaming of the big show. Apparently the IIFA awards have never been streamed live. Go figure.
The following video comes from user smsr101’s cellphone. Not the best but it’s something and it’s live.

We have heard that the LIVE show was waste of money. The show started about hour late and the performances by the stars were NOT very impressive.
Lot of people left early.

The show was garbage. I want my money back. Started on Indian standard time.
IIFA people had no regard for time.
Will never attend another show organized by these people.

Lots of excitement was in the air, however the excitement fizzled by 11:30 as energy levels dropped to the lateness of the hour. Items by best new male Singh and others were so electrifying that you had to sit up and take note.. best performances I have ever seen. I usually don’t like canned music, but the high level of production for music and graphics were incomparable.
what da hell was dat???Salman khan never wins da best actor award,,,althogh dabangg is a blockbuster….Salman khan rocks
