A 19-year-old female cyclist from Whitby was seriously injured as the result of a collision with a motor vehicle in Whitby this weekend.

On Saturday July 16, 2011 at approximately 11:06 p.m. officers from Central West Division attended a collision at Garden Street and Rossland Road East involving a cyclist and a motor vehicle. The Whitby cyclist was riding her bicycle through a pedestrian crossover at the intersection when she was struck by a vehicle turning eastbound onto Rossland Road East from Garden Street. The motor vehicle was being operated by a 41-year-old male driver from Whitby.

As a result of the collision, the cyclist suffered serious life-threatening injuries and was transported by EMS to Lakeridge Health in Oshawa, where she remains in serious but stable condition with numerous fractures.

The roadway was closed for several hours while the DRPS Collision Investigation Unit collected evidence. Police do not believe alcohol or the use of electronic instruments were factors in this incident.
