SeaWorld of Florida faces $75,000 fine for three safety violations. This was found after investigative research conducted by Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
SeaWorld faces charges regarding the killing of a trainer infront of the park visitors by a killer whale. The department has termed this act as “willful violation,” meaning SeaWorld showed “plain indifference to or intentional disregard for employee safety and health.”
Cindy Coe, OSHA’s Atlanta regional administrator, said in a statement. “Nonetheless, it required its employees to work within the pool wall, on ledges and on shelves where they were subject to dangerous behavior by the animals.”
SeaWorld spokeswoman Becca Bides disagreed, saying, “These allegations are completely baseless, unsupported by any evidence or precedent, and reflect a fundamental lack of understanding of the safety requirements associated with marine mammal care. The safety of our guests and employees and the welfare of our animals are core values for SeaWorld and areas in which we do not compromise.”
Ingrid Newkirk, president of the animal rights group PETA, voiced their opinion saying “The company goes on making money at the expense of animals and its employees,”
Since the accident, SeaWorld has restricted all trainers from entering the water with killer whales until further notice.
