The temperatures have once again gone below in British Columbia’s south coast as the region gets blanketed in snow for the second time in less than a week. The snowfall on Monday was the first significant amount of snow cover on Metro Vancouver in more than two years, causing widespread traffic delays and prompting the closure of several schools.

Environment Canada had earlier mentioned that a considerable amount of snow would hit the south coast starting on Thursday evening, but the weather agency has since dialed back its forecast. The prediction has been updated from between five and 10 centimetres of snow for the Lower Mainland to between 10 and 15 centimetres for southern Vancouver Island. A meteorologist with Environment Canada, Matt MacDonald, mentioned on Friday that “we’re expecting a little less than originally anticipated because last night’s snow didn’t materialize until this morning.” He mentioned that lower-lying areas were expected to likely begin mixing with rain on Friday afternoon. According to McDonald, “temperatures are right around freezing, which makes it difficult to forecast.”

So far, Vancouver Island has received up to 12 centimetres of snow on the Malahat highway and the Cowichan Valley, and coastal communities experiencing between five and 10 centimetres. In an announcement on Thursday, the provincial government said it may have to shut down two of the Lower Mainland’s main bridges if workers were unable to prevent ice from forming on the structures’ cables and falling on passing vehicles.
