The interim Conservative leader, Rona Ambrose, is continuously raising serious questions about the Liberal fundraising events that advertise access to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and members of his cabinet as she labels them unethical. According to Ambrose, “it smells fishy and these guys know it” since “it is against the law for the prime minister and ministers to meet with people and take money from people who are seeking something from the government.”
Reports have unveiled that a series of events featuring appearances by Trudeau and high-profile MPs, including Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould and Finance Minister Bill Morneau, raised money for the Liberal Party as they charged up to $1,500 for the tickets. According to the reports, one of the fundraiser held in Toronto allegedly allowed Chinese billionaires to connect with Trudeau and resulted in one of the guests donating $1 million to the Trudeau Foundation and the University of Montreal. Another man who attended the event was awaiting approval for his bank to operate in Canada.
Ethics Commissioner, Mary Dawson, has also called the fundraisers “unsavoury” but she also pointed out that law doesn’t allow her to act on these fundraisers. Dawsom called upon the Parliament to give her office a broader scope. Meanwhile, Ambrose has confirmed to have written to Dawson and Lobbying Commissioner, Karen Shepherd, about the new information that has surfaced since they were last asked to probe the events. She claimed that “this goes to the heart of the integrity of the Prime Minister’s Office,” adding that “I think he’s already tainted the office of the prime minister… I think they’ve done damage already.”
