A spokeswoman for Canadian Foreign Minister Stephane Dion, Chantal Gagnon, has confirmed the report published by North Korea’s KCNA news agency that says several Canadian diplomats visited the country from Tuesday until Thursday. According to the report, the diplomats visited the Canadian pastor, Hyeon Soo Lim, serving life sentence while they were on the visit.

Mr. Lim, who served at one of the largest churches in Canada, is serving a life sentence in the country for alleged subversion. Sentenced to hard labor for life in December 2015, Lim is accused of an attempt to overthrow the regime in North Korea. In her remarks, Gagnon stressed that “we are still very concerned about his health, well-being and continued detention and are ‎working actively to secure his release.” She added that “this case is absolutely a priority for us,” but she declined to give more details about Lim’s health.

Although Canada had established diplomatic relations with Pyongyang in 2001, they were eventually frozen in 2010. As of now, Ottawa claims to only keep a relationship with North Korea regarding issues related to regional security, human rights and consular cases. In a statement, Lim’s Toronto-area church said “we are hopeful that this is a positive sign that we will see Reverend Lim released and home soon.” According to the church, Mr. Lim visited North Korea more than 100 times since 1997 and helped set up an orphanage and nursing home.
