The official website of The White House has announced the new U.S. President Donald Trump’s intention to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement only a few minutes after the 45th president finished his inauguration speech on Friday. According to the update posted on White House website, Trump promised to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact signed last year by 14 countries, including Canada, as he vows to fulfil his promise during the campaign to fix or abandon trade deals he said had cost the U.S. jobs.

The statement mentions that “if our partners refuse a renegotiation that gives American workers a fair deal, then the President will give notice of the United States’ intent to withdraw from NAFTA.” Furthermore, it reads that “for too long, Americans have been forced to accept trade deals that put the interests of insiders and the Washington elite over the hard-working men and women of this country. As a result, blue-collar towns and cities have watched their factories close and good-paying jobs move overseas, while Americans face a mounting trade deficit and a devastated manufacturing base.”

Foreign Affairs Minister, Chrystia Freeland, had already mentioned earlier in the day that Canada will be “firm and strong” in defending its interests. Shortly before Trump’s inaugural address on Capitol Hill, Freeland assured that Canada-U.S. relationship will remain strong. She stressed that “I do really want to emphasize that my principal job, and I think the job of our government right now, is building a relationship with this new administration and making clear to Canadians and to Americans that we are going to be absolutely firm and strong, friendly, but strong in defending our national interests.”
