Toronto Police has claimed that growing number of violent armed robberies of marijuana dispensaries in the city have become a significant “public safety issue” which is going to get even worse by the lack of reporting by owners. However, one of the operator responded by alleging that storefronts that do report the thefts end up getting raided by police.

In a detailed press conference, Toronto police Supt. Bryce Evans explained that there were 13 robberies of illegal marijuana dispensaries in the city between June and December 2016. He elucidated that suspects carried handguns in 10 of those incidents and “in two of those robberies, shots were fired within the stores by the suspects.” According to Evans, the suspects also reportedly had knives and pepper spray during the robberies. He complained that “six of those 13 robberies were not reported by the owners or employees, rather by customers and/or persons within the area of the robbery.”

Speaking about the most recent statistics, Evans shared that four dispensaries were robbed since Jan. 1, while two of them involved handguns and one involved knives including a case when shot was fired in the store. He revealed that “two of the four robberies were not reported by the owners or employees but rather by independent witnesses,” adding no dispensary staff were charged this month. Overall Evans concluded that “during these 17 robberies, employees and customers have been stabbed, pistol whipped and pepper sprayed. In addition, there’s no doubt that the employees and customers had been traumatized by these violent armed robberies.”

  1. Unfortunately this is one of the main issues with “local” dispensaries along with a lack of privacy and sometimes consistent supply.
