Thirteen bylaw officers ticketed more than 500 vehicles Friday as the city imposed the season’s first parking ban on residential bus routes so that they could be properly plowed.

But those who received the $50 tickets were given the rest of the day to avoid the extra $150 in impound fees that would result from their vehicles being towed, said Erin Blaine, parking enforcement co-ordinator with the city.

“We hope not to tow. We actually hoped not to give out tickets, either, we want compliance,” Blaine said. “If your vehicle remains unmoved Saturday, we will tow your vehicle.”

The parking ban on bus routes went into effect at 7 a.m. Friday to give city crews space to clear the snow and get traffic on bus routes moving freely.

The city sent enforcement teams to-hand out tickets as a warning before the tow trucks move in. The only exception was safety, Blaine said.

“If, at any time, the vehicle is posing a safety concern, we tow it right away.”

When plows tackle streets on Saturday, the city will sending in tow trucks to take vehicles to the city impound lot.

If a vehicle is towed and stored, the additional costs add up quickly. Police will charge a minimum $150 to spring a seized car from the lot at 12230 124th Avenue. Leaving the vehicle there costs $28 per day.
