The controversial death of 39-year-old Oscar Bartholomew in Grenada was caused by the head wounds so severe that fractured his skull and led to excessive blood loss.

Allegedly, the Toronto man died at the hands of Grenadian police when he mistakenly embraced a female police officer. The death caused a national and international uproar; therefore, the Grenadian Prime Minister Tillman Thomas ordered a detailed investigation.

Last week, two police officers were detained and interrogated while the head of the police station where Bartholomew was taken into custody was being reassigned. Five police officers have been charged with manslaughter and will appear in court on Tuesday, said Nicole Best, a freelance journalist in Grenada.

Commissioner Wilan Thompson emphasized that the internal investigation would certainly be comprehensive.

“Everything has been done to quickly complete the investigation and I will be intimately involved,” Thompson said. “We are determined to unearth the truth and anyone found to be culpable will find that justice will take its course.”

Lawyer representing Bartholomew’s family insisted upon officers’ suspensions during the investigation. He urged the investigation to be more transparent.

“We’re not asking for the police to rush to do anything. We’re not asking them to rush to charge anyone . . . We’re asking for the police to take their time and do their job,” Sylvester said Thursday.

“If justice demands 10 police officers be charged, so let it be done. If justice demands that no police officers be charged, then so let it be done. The process should be transparent.”
