Relatives of Oscar Bartholomew, a Canadian who was allegedly tortured to death by Grenada police, are in a state of shock after learning that the officers accused of killing the Canadian only face charges of manslaughter.

“Everybody is upset,” Anastasia Bartholomew said Monday, expressing anger that has been spreading across the island.

Allegedly, the Toronto man died at the hands of Grenadian police when he mistakenly embraced a female police officer. The death caused a national and international uproar; therefore, the Grenadian Prime Minister Tillman Thomas ordered a detailed investigation.

“They (officers) never gave him a chance to explain himself. They tied his feet and his hands. It sounds unbelievable, but it happened,” she alleged.

Derick Sylvester, the family’s lawyer, alleged the injuries were consistent with being beaten by police batons. Five Royal Grenada Police Force officers: Consts. Edward Gibson, Shaun Ganness, Ruddy Felix, Kenton Hazzard and Wendell Sylvester, are accused of manslaughter.

“They should all be kicked out of the force,” Anastasia said.

On the other hand, Commissioner Wilan Thompson ensured that the internal investigation would certainly be comprehensive.

“Everything has been done to quickly complete the investigation and I will be intimately involved,” Thompson said. “We are determined to unearth the truth and anyone found to be culpable will find that justice will take its course.”
