Five Grenada police officers accused of beating a Canadian to death had their first court appearance Tuesday morning and were then sent back to jail pending further court proceedings.

Constables Edward Gibson, Shaun Ganness, Ruddy Felix, Kenton Hazzard and Wendell Sylvester made their first appearance before the St. George’s Magistrate Court Tuesday morning.

All the alleged killers will appear in St. David Magistrate court on Friday for the beginning of a preliminary inquiry, said Dunbar Belfon, the police superintendent in charge of public relations.

Allegedly, the Toronto man died at the hands of Grenadian police when he mistakenly embraced a female police officer. The death caused a national and international uproar; therefore, the Grenadian Prime Minister Tillman Thomas ordered a detailed investigation.

According to lawyer Derick Sylvester, Bartholomew family plans to file a civil lawsuit against the State.

“This is a tragedy on all counts, especially for the Bartholomew family,” David said.

“Like all Grenadians, including all my colleagues in government, we would have preferred this not to have happened to anyone, particularly to a national who was visiting with his wife. But from the perspective of visitor safety, and in comparison to other tourist-dependent nations of the world, Grenada still is — and will continue to be — an extremely safe destination for travellers from around the world.”
