The Shafia honour-killing trial resumes Monday in Kingston, Ont. The proceedings are likely to resume with more defence evidence.

58-year-old Mohammad Shafia, his 42-year-old wife Tooba Yahya, and their 21-year-old son Hamed have pled not guilty to four counts of first-degree murder. All three have been accused of killing four Shafia women in the name of honour.

Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, and Geeti, 13, along with Rona Mohammad, Shafia’s first wife were all found dead in a vehicle at the bottom of a canal in Kingston on June 30, 2009.

According to Crown prosecutors, the father was particularly disturbed that his daughters were dating boys. Allegedly, the Shafia women were murdered to restore family honour.

Mohammad Shafia testified that while he was unaware of any conspiracy to murder the women, he did agree they deserved their fate.

“That’s up to God,” he told the jury.

Since the trial started in October, court has heard testimony from 50 witnesses, including teachers, social workers, police officers, technical experts, canal workers, and family members from Sweden, France, Germany, the U.S. and Canada

Witnesses for the defence are scheduled to testify Monday when the hearing begins at 11 a.m. ET.
