Rob Nicholson, the federal Justice Minister says he will definitely elucidate the law in order to make it easier for gay couples to get divorced, who once came to Canada to get married.  However, the federal government has no such intentions of reopening the discussion on same-sex marriages.

“I will be looking at options to clarify the law so that such marriages performed in Canada can be undone in Canada,” Rob Nicholson said.

Nicholson responded to international headlines indicating that Canadian government has failed to officially recognize the marriages of thousands of foreign same-sex couples who flew to Canada to wed since their home countries did not allow to do so.

The debate on same-sex divorces arose when a foreign couple married in Canada came back to get legally separated.

William Raillant-Clark, New Zealander and Daniel, Californian, tied knots in Vancouver in 2004 during a wave of same-sex marriages after the unions were legalized in Canada.

“I feel like the government is playing games with us,” Raillant-Clark, now a permanent resident of Canada, said.

“I feel really hurt because one of the reasons we moved here was because we were fed up with all the bullshit,” he added.

On the other hand, PM Harper quickly dismissed the controversy by saying that his government “has no intention of further opening or reopening this issue.”
