Immigration Minister Jason Kenney alleges the policy of banning Muslim women from covering their faces during citizenship ceremonies has been highly commended.

Mr. Kenney was addressing an audience at a Muslim Canadian Congress while he said polls have established that 80 percent Canadians agree with the decision, whereas only 14 percent were against it.

He said: “It is only a sign of respect for your fellow citizens, when you are pledging to them your commitment to live in a community with them, to show your face and who you are and that your pledge is heartfelt and authentic.”

He also said he is not in the favor of holding separate citizenship ceremonies for Muslim women who choose to cover their faces in public.

“We are all becoming Canadians together,” he said. “We are not going to start segregating our citizenship ceremonies.”

Moreover, Mr. Kenney said taking an oath is a public act; therefore, it shall not be done in a manner that hides identity.

“He [Sheikh Mohamed Tantawi, Egypt’s top Muslim authority] clarified for me that people in the West who think this is a religious obligation do not understand Islam law. So I am not going to second-guess the most pre-eminent Sharia authority in the Sunni world,” said Mr. Kenney.
