A time capsule from 1931 containing an NHL rule book, a municipal code and a small carved elephant was found at Maple Leaf Gardens Thursday.

Reportedly, an ancient copper box was found in the time capsule, which was discovered a few months back by laborers while the building was being restructured to house a grocery store and a gym for Ryerson University.

“M.B. Campbell 124 Lindsay Ave 9/21/31” was engraved inside the capsule. Ryerson University president Sheldon Levy said Campbell’s identity remains a mystery.

Moreover, the capsule contained a letter from the directors of Maple Leaf Gardens, a stock prospectus for Maple Leaf Gardens Ltd, 1930-31 NHL rule book, 1931 rule book for the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association, 1930 Ontario Hockey Association rule book, 1931 Toronto Municipal Handbook, a red ensign flag and a small ivory elephant with remains of a blue ribbon.

Former owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Conn Smyth, buried the capsule when the Gardens were first built. Smyth’s relatives were present at the ceremony, and two of his great grandsons shared theories about the elephant mystery.

Apparently, the capsule along with its contents will be exhibited for the general public at Ryerson University soon.
