The Nova Scotia RCMP remind you to remember your personal safety when dating on line.

With Valentine’s Day around the corner it’s important to keep your personal safety in mind when using online dating services. ‘As the popularity of online dating services increases, so does the potential of becoming a victim of an online dating predator’ says RCMP Sgt. Brigdit Leger.

Online dating can be very rewarding but it’s important to be cautious. If you choose to date on line, the RCMP reminds you of these security tips to ensure you don’t put anything more than your heart on the line:
 

• Dating sites: Ensure you read the privacy policy of the site.
• Guard your identity: Remain anonymous or use a nickname until you feel comfortable to disclose more information.
• Never disclose personal information: Do not include your last name, address, workplace, phone number, or any other identifying information when corresponding online.
• Do not disclose credit card or banking information.
• Do not provide your address under the guise of receiving gifts or flowers.
• Ensure your first meeting is in a public place and be sure to remain in a public place.
• Make sure you tell a friend who you are meeting and where. Be sure to check in with your friend after the meeting.
• Stay sober and never leave your drink unattended.

Whether you’re using the internet, or meeting someone in a public place, dating is never risk-free. The RCMP remind you that you’re in control and you so it’s up to you to make your personal safety a priority.
