At last, the passengers of Costa Allegra cruise ship have left the ship in the Seychelles capital Victoria. A sudden fire on Monday seized the ship’s engines while it was prowled by pirates. The passengers, including 13 Canadians, had to stay in the Indian Ocean for three long days.

According to Niccolo Alba, captain of the ship, most of the passengers were prepared to leave the ship after its engine suddenly seized.

He said: “Guests were prepared to disembark; they put on life vests and were taken to lifeboats. The emergency situation lasted for three hours to make sure the fire was completely out.

“Obviously all the passengers were assembled at the muster stations to prepare to board the lifeboats [after the fire broke out in the engine room on Monday]. All the passengers were absolutely calm.”

An officer from the Ministry of Health, who chose to stay anonymous, said six of the passengers broke their limbs and many others were injured; however, he refused to share the reason behind these injuries. Reportedly, one female passenger was hurried into an ambulance and another could not seem to be able to walk off the ship on her own.

Norbert Stiekema, executive vice-president of the operating company Costa Crociere said: “This has a risk of damaging our brand, these incidents don’t often happen but there’s a law of probability. In terms of compensation we will reimburse the amount spent on the cruise holiday, and double it. We’re also refunding any spending on board.”
