Thomas Mulcair was grilled by his competitors Sunday about his fiscal agenda and failure to contribute to the national reserves. It was evident that candidates Brian Topp and Peggy Nash came with a mission to go tough on the alleged front-runner.
Brian Topp kept his focus on Mulcair’s fiscal and environmental policies. He said Mulcair’s plans including a cap-and-trade carbon tax have failed in other jurisdictions.
“So why do you want to adopt an agenda which led all these parties to defeat?” Topp asked.
Despite all the heated up debate, Mulcair stayed composed.
“I want to continue moving forward,” Mulcair replied. “I don’t want to go backwards, to fall into the same rut of the old ways of looking at things.
“With Jack (Layton), we proposed a modernization and we must continue this modernization. It’s far from finished.”
Following Topp’s aggressive tone, Nash stressed upon Mulcair’s zero financial offerings to the NDP’s coffers before 2011. He only contributed to the Quebec wing.
“Are you ready to admit your error,” Nash asked. “I am not questioning your allegiance. Are you saying there are rules for everyone and different ones for you?”
Mulcair explained that he was lone MP for Quebec at the time, thus it is silly to raise questions at the focus of his donations.
Moreover, NDP leadership runner Niki Ashton once again exhibited reservations against the quality of fellow candidate Paul Dewar’s French.
Manitoba MP Niki Ashton said after the debate: “I think that’s a legitimate concern that members have raised is the need to have somebody that is fluent in both official languages. If we flipped it over, I don’t think we would be okay with somebody who is not fully fluent in English.”
