Kevin Gregson, 45, former Mountie is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 51-year-old Ottawa police Const. Eric Czapnik. Allegedly, Gregson stabbed Czapnik to death in 2009.

Gregson has pleaded not guilty to all the charges laid against him. On Monday, Gregson’s defence lawyer Craig Fleming insisted the jury to come back to the decree of manslaughter. He said the case is a tricky one and deserves vigilant consideration.

Fleming said: “This is the single most important event in Mr. Gregson’s life. You, his jury, must decide his future. This is not like Hollywood or like a lot of other trials. The defence has not attacked Crown evidence or witnesses. We have accepted it largely unchallenged.”

The Crown argues Gregson did not want to commit suicide. He was merely trying to humiliate the police department which had suspended him.

“His life was definitely in jeopardy, whether he was trying to kill himself or not,” said Fleming.

In the closing argument, Crown prosecutor Brian Holowka said Gregson is a narcissist who is conclusively at fault.

He said: “I don’t have to persuade you because the evidence speaks clearly and loudly that Mr. Gregson is inescapably guilty of the charges. You have proof beyond any doubt. It was a brutal attack. Ireneusz (Eric) Czapnik was murdered while performing his duties as a police officer.

“Kevin Gregson is a narcissist with an inflated sense of his own abilities. It is no exaggeration that he was confident in his ability with a knife. This explains why he took a knife to a gunfight.”
