It seems like Canadian air force is planning to push the expiry of its old CF-18s to keep using them for another decade. According to associate Defence Minister Julian Fantino, the air force shall not let go off its old CF-18s until 2023.

“We are well-positioned due to the investments we have made to extend the lifespan of our current CF-18 fleet. Our intention is to receive the F-35 when it is most cost-effective and the development is complete. And this is currently between 2017 and 2023,” Fantino said in a speech to defence industry representatives in Ottawa.

On the other hand, NDP raises a few issues with the proposed agenda. Matthew Kellway says, “What I’ve heard in defence committee is the chief of air staff say very clearly that he can’t do anything with the CF-18s beyond 2020… Our Canadian Forces have come forward and first told the minister we need 80 planes to replace the CF-18 fleet.”

In addition, critics emphasize on Fantino’s fluctuating remarks. They find the proposal halting.

“That may be a little bit reassuring, but what is really damning to the government is how they’ve handled this F-35 boondoggle from beginning to end, where in fact they have been not up-front and honest and transparent with Parliament in terms of their answers,” Liberal MP Wayne Easter said.
