Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair says in an online video message that the police officer who was stabbed in the neck before Sunday midnight would soon feel better. Apparently, the officer is identified as Const. Jeff Blair with 13 Division’s traffic unit.
“He was in surgery last night and there’ll be a slow period of recovery,” says Blair.
Reportedly, the 30-year-old officer was caught up near Bathurst Street and Wilson Avenue in North York when the incident took place. He was immediately transferred to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
According to Insp. Peter Callaghan, shots were fired before the officer was injured.
“As a result of some interaction with a member of the public, there was an exchange of gunfire with an individual,” said Callaghan. “As a result of that, a member of the public has been injured.”
The president of the Toronto Police Association, Mike McCormack, said his “thoughts and prayers” are with the officer’s family. Along with the injured officer, another man was rushed to hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. Details about the civilian are yet to be disclosed. Apparently, the neighbors heard eight distinct shots and saw only one officer lying injured on the ground.
“He’s a public servant, he’s out there protecting the people of Toronto late at night,” Chief Blair said in his video message. “We’re very grateful that he will recover but it reminds us all of the risks that Toronto police officers face every day.”
