A 52-year old canoeist reported missing has been located.  RCMP Guysborough County District in partnership with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, Nova Scotia Emergency Measure Organization, as well as Pictou County and Sheet Harbour Ground Search and Rescue Teams participated in the search.

The canoeist had set out alone to paddle the St. Mary’s River from Caledonia to Sherbrooke on April 17th, 2012.  When he became overdue his family reported him missing to Guysborough County District RCMP.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre dispatched a Cormorant Helicopter to the scene during the early morning hours of April 18th, 2012.  The low cloud cover and poor visibility initially hampered search efforts; however, conditions improved and the crew of the Cormorant Helicopter located the paddler approximately 15 kilometres from the point where he set off on his trip.  The paddler was unharmed and in good spirits when located.

The RCMP recommend that outdoor enthusiasts ensure their trip plans are communicated in detail to friends and or family before setting out in Nova Scotia’s wilderness areas.
