The controversial debate on abortion was triggered once again in the House of Commons, Thursday. A backbench Conservative MP, Stephen Woodworth, claims the debate will at least set the matter on motion.

“It certainly allows us to have an honest discussion about the abortion question. How can we honestly discuss all of the complicated issues around abortion if we cannot decide whether or not a child is a human being before the moment of the complete birth?” Woodworth said.

Allegedly, the topic came back for discussion because the Harper government is been accused of trying to revive a pointless national debate about abortion. According to NDP Opposition Leader Tom Mulcair, the debated was triggered so the Conservatives could win the hearts of their supporters.

“If in Canada we cannot agree that a law which decrees that some human beings are not human is wrong, then we need to definitely have some discussion about that. That really is the starting point for any just system of laws,” Woodworth said. “It’s a serious debate. It should be addressed.”

Several pro-choice supporters gathered outside the Parliament carrying posters with slogans like “reproductive justice now” and “if you can’t trust me with a choice, how can you trust me with a child.” They swore to fight back against the attack on reproductive rights.
