People who protest while wearing masks in Canada could face up to 10 years in prison, Conservatives announce on Thursday. The parliament would create a new law against those who disguise themselves with masks and create riots.
Initially, the proposed bill mentioned a prison term of five years, but the Conservative MPs thought a more rigid punishment would make the new law more effective so they doubled it to 10 years in prison.
The bill was passed despite the retaliation of Democrats who claim the bill is deceptive as committing a crime with a mask on is already an offence under the Criminal Code. According to Blake Richards, the Conservative backbencher, the law is essentially preventative as it allows police to intervene and arrest masked rebels before demonstrations get out of control.
Earlier, the Conservatives propose their list of changes to a controversial new refugee bill on Wednesday. Immigration Minister Jason Kenney confirms he was adamant to propose a few modifications to Bill C-31.
Kenney said: “I believe it’s not right for the government to take the position that the original bill is the only option possible. I’m open to other reasonable ideas… and I believe the modifications are in agreement with our objectives.”
Kenney says the government cannot accept the earlier version of the bill as there are several notable flaws in it. On the other hand, Rob Shropshire of the Canadian Council for Refugees is of the opinion that the government should wholeheartedly accept the primary version. However, he thinks there is no harm in reviewing the changes.
