The suspects of recent smoke-bombing of the Montreal metro system are to be detained for over a week as their bail hearings are postponed until May 23. The youth face charges including spreading fear of terrorism – which can send them to prison for up to five years.
Allegedly, three women and one man were behind the smoke bomb attacks that blocked several subway stations last week, forcing authorities to shutdown the service and creating havoc in Montreal. The incident took place on Thursday near the peak rush hour. It seems like smoke filled the stations at Jean Talon, Lionel Groulx, Prefontaine and Snowdon, eventually halting the entire network.
“The three events took place simultaneously, so it’s hard to believe the four same individuals would have committed that,” police Sgt. Ian Lafrenière said.
Authorities tried to fix the problem as soon as possible but all their attempts were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, another smoke attack took place which forced the authorities to shutdown. The episode went on till around 10 a.m. Thursday.
The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal says the recent smoke bomb attacks lead to at least $11 million loss while the Montreal Economic Institute estimates it to be around $9.3 million. Many people who heard about the incident drove to work instead, and streets throughout Montreal were overflowing with cars.
Protesters gathered outside the courthouse Monday condemning the recent arrests. The suspects were arrested late Friday after surrendering themselves to the RCMP. They have remained in detention since then. Police urge the public to share any additional information regarding smoke bombs at the Préfontaine and Jean Talon stations.
