A series of deadly wildfires blazed Arizona and urged the U.S. authorities to rush and set the fire off. Hundreds of firefighters backed by air support hurried to take control over five separate blazes in northern Arizona.

Experts say Arizona has firmly entered the annual fire season. According to Cliff Pearlberg – a Tonto National Forest spokesman – 300 homes were warned and asked to evacuate the town of Crown King. Similar fires hit Arizona almost each summer but experts say it is too early for such a serious one to take place.

“I can’t explain why we have a burst of fire activity today,” said Pearlberg, who has battled Arizona fires since 1974. “But I can say the fact that so many of the fires we have are seemingly problematic this early in the year is unusual… We had a pitiful winter when it comes to moisture, and as a result the vegetation is very, very dry and without the snow pack in the high country that vegetation is also very, very dry.

“It’s also unseasonably warm for this kind of year and of course the relative humidity is very, very low which does not bode well for fire activity.”

Tom Spencer, head of the predictive service for the Texas forest service, also warned about similarly hazardous fires predicted in across the south-west.

“It’s not looking very good for Arizona right now,” he said. “But all of the west right now has the potential to have an active fire season.”
