Quebec Education Minister Line Beauchamp announced her resignation from her cabinet post Monday. Beauchamp says she is stepping out of politics as there is nothing more she can do to end the 14-week student strike that has created such havoc in the city.

Beauchamp said: “I would never have reached a compromise with the students. So I am making the biggest compromise I can make.”

She says she does not see the support and trust from the student body anymore, therefore, she sees no point in staying at her post. However, she emphasizes that the violent demonstrations have not intimidated her.

“I am not giving up in the face of vandalism and civil disobedience,” said Beauchamp, who will resign her Montreal-area seat. “I am resigning because I no longer believe I’m part of the solution.”

Premier Jean Charest said Beauchamp’s decision is her own independent choice but it was fully supported by her colleagues. He said he would have preferred that she stayed but that is something she must decide on her own.

“I want to say to you that we — from the outset — worked on the premise that those on the other side of the table were in good faith. We listened,” Charest said.

“We moved on a number of things. And quite frankly, I don’t think there is anyone who could question the good faith of our government. We believe in this policy. This policy is going to go ahead.”
