The government of Quebec Premier Jean Charest is on its mission to put an end to the messy student protests that have vandalized the entire city of Montreal and other areas. Charest announced an official cancellation of classes Thursday morning and consequently proposed new set of rules to end the demonstrations.

The provincial government has tabled a new legislation which will allow the police to impose fine as high as $125,000 to the groups that will create troubles for those who want to attend classes at a Quebec university or CEGEP school.

After the legislation was put forward Thursday night, a clause-by-clause debate took place Friday morning in the provincial assembly. The debate is likely to continue till the evening. The new legislation was not welcomed by the student body.

As the students learned about Charest government’s upcoming plans, protesters created havoc on the streets of Montreal for a 24th consecutive daily protest. Police arrested over 120 people Wednesday. The back-to-school act states that an official of a student association or union or even a spokesperson can be fined from $7,000 to $35,000.

Student protesters seem to have gone completely anti-Charest.

Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, considered one of the more radical student leaders said: “I believe my anger is quite representative of the way students are feeling, and I am convinced that will be expressed in the streets… over the next few days and the next few weeks. It’s a declaration of war, not only against students but also against anyone who clings in any way to democracy, against anyone who clings to what Quebec was before this legislation was tabled.”
