Federal NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair is scheduled to visit Alberta in a few weeks. He is expected to visit the Fort McMurray region during his trip. Alberta NDP Leader Brian Mason said Friday that he will welcome Mulcair warmly and that this visit is aimed at cooling down the ongoing political war.

“I’m hopeful that by coming to Alberta the whole discussion will be made a little more rational,” said Mason.

Earlier, Mulcair said Canada is apparently suffering from the “Dutch disease,” as the thriving oil sands industry is raising the Canadian dollar to the extent that it is adversely affecting the manufacturing sectors in other provinces.

On the contrary, the Harper government has backed a study that analyses whether Canada’s economy suffers from the Dutch disease, a theory which was initially scorned when brought up by Tom. Industry Canada has paid three academics $25,000 to carry out the research, which is to be published in Resource and Energy Economics.

Mulcair’s comments were criticized by three western premiers, including Redford, who said Mulcair’s analysis was in the dark and seemed intended to pit one region of Canada against another. Initially, Mulcair responded harshly to the premiers’ criticism but later claimed to shift his focused on Ottawa instead of the provinces.

“I certainly wouldn’t juxtapose one against the other. I think the situation is a lot more complicated than that,” Mason said. “But when people are saying that (Mulcair) is attacking the West, he’s attacking Alberta, that he’s saying the oilsands are a disease, they are being as divisive or more divisive than Mr. Mulcair. I do think some people, for their own political purposes, are misinterpreting what he’s saying.”
