Richard Matthews, who allegedly swallowed a valuable diamond, has passed it over the weekend. Apparently, Matthews stole the $20,000 stone from a Windsor jewellery store.
“Richard Matthews passed the stone during the day on May 19th and it was retrieved by forensic officers during one of their continued searches. The gem was analyzed and confirmed to be the missing diamond and has been since returned to its rightful owners at the store,” Staff Sgt. Dave Kigar said.
The 52-year-old is kept in the County Gaol until his next court appearance. Earlier, Matthews was kept in a dry cell since he allegedly swallowed the 1.7-carat diamond.
“They are built for these specific reasons where we need to isolate somebody and isolate the opportunity for them to rid themselves of potential evidence,” said Deputy Chief Jerome Brannagan.
According to Sgt. Kigar, cubic zirconia was identified on Friday but the second stone is still missing. Since Matthews passed the stolen diamond, he could now be charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000. The RCMP has already charged Mathews with theft and breach of court conditions.
“It would probably not be in the accused person’s best interests to be housed in any other facility where he wouldn’t be by himself completely, because other people may want to acquire that diamond,” said Brannagan.
“It’s not like a hazing or ‘you’re the junior guy, in you go. Whoever is involved in that has to be somebody who is qualified to give evidence in court. They’re going to have to articulate what happened, how it happened, how they recovered it. The chain of evidence has to be maintained,” he added.
