Over 1,000 people gathered in Dufferin Grove Park Wednesday to support the student protesters in Quebec who are demonstrating against the proposed tuition fee hikes. It was one of the seven protests called in Toronto Wednesday.

One of the protesters said: “It’s partially inspired by what’s happening in Quebec, but we’re hoping people will make that local connection too.”

Quebec demonstrations have been going on since February; however, protesters have been gathering around in Ottawa and other regions to resist the proposed fee hikes. These protests have created havoc and police all around has been busy trying to maintain peace. To date, 2,500 people have been arrested.

“The right to protest is one of the most legitimate forms of democracy,” said Madison Trusolino, 22, who graduated from York University. “Quebec is representing what young people are feeling, which is the Baby Boomer generation has created a climate of perpetuating debt. Any rise in tuition is unacceptable. We’re going to spend the rest of our lives in debt just to get the education we deserve.”

Nonetheless, it seems like the Quebec government’s court is going to call the final shots. The court has been considering the most recent offer made by Quebec students to put an end to all the chaos. On the other hand, student leaders are not willing to share the contents of their latest proposal.

“There were exchanges of offers, like ping-pong, throughout the day. That ended with our last offer and we wait for the reaction,” Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, a co-spokesman for the more hardline CLASSE student group, told reporters late last night. “We will continue to discuss in good faith with the minister to try and find a way out of the crisis, ideally (today).”
