In the outturn of unsuccessful negotiations, students announced a massive rally Saturday afternoon in Montreal. The CLASSE student association called the strike which gathered thousands of students near McGill University.

Lately, many were hoping that the negotiations with Premier Jean Charest’s government will help find a middle ground between both fronts; however, the efforts failed last Thursday. The demonstrations have been going on for almost four months.

It triggered the government to legislate Bill 78, hoping to tone down the protests. Thereby, the students are now protesting against fee hike as well as Bill 78.

Premier Jean Charest said: “The people responsible for security will be on duty and will do their work, but we are appealing to people who were thinking of disturbing the Grand Prix to abstain, out of respect for Quebecers. Because it’s not just the government now… It’s all well and good to demonstrate against Jean Charest, to demonstrate against the government, but now they are harming Quebecers and the people they are seeking support from.

“My government understood the message. But now it’s Quebecers who are asking them to act in a calmer manner.”

CLASSE spokesman Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois alleges the protests will be kept as peaceful as possible. Nadeau-Dubois said the group only plans to raise its grievances with the provincial government and would not stop people from going to the race.

“You have to understand we cannot block the hundreds of thousands of students of Quebec from doing an action if they want to do an action. I think they have to examine their consciences when it comes to their acts,” he said Friday.
